What Is a Garage Arbor?

In some parts of the country, a garage arbor is a fairly normal thing to see, and once the plants are fully grown, you never actually see the arbor – only the plants. That is perhaps the biggest beauty of a garage arbor, that as time goes by, it disappears and only vines, flowers, and leaves can be seen in its place.

If you live in an area where garage arbors are not the norm, then you might not have even noticed them before. These are structures that are attached above and on the side of garages and used as a framework for plants. If you have seen a home with ivy growing on it or plants surrounding doors or windows, then chances are that there is an arbor underneath there, holding the whole thing up!

What Type Should You Buy?

There are many different types of garage arbors, and the one that you buy will depend on many factors, not least of which is the construction of your home. You will need to attach the arbor to your home, or at the very least dig it deeply into the ground next to your home. So if you have a stucco and concrete home, you may need help with this. On the other hand, if your home is wooden, then you can simply nail the arbor to your home to keep it in place.

What Material Should You Choose?

Again, the material you choose for your garage arbor should be similar to that of your home, because for at least a while, it will be in clear view of everyone (at least until the plants begin to take over). Therefore, if you have a white, wooden home, then you should choose a white, wooden arbor. There are some people who prefer iron arbors or even plastic ones (which are far more affordable), but that choice is up to you.

If you are looking for long-term added value to your home, then wooden arbors that are the same color as your home are generally thought to be the best choice.

What Plants Should You Use?

There are many plants that work well with arbors or trellises, and most of these will have tiny little fingers on their stems that are able to grasp the structure of the arbor and attach. Ivy-type plants are the most obvious choice, but rose bushes are also able to make the climb and will provide you with flowers surrounding your garage for decades to come.

However, with all arbors that are attached to a home, it is important to consider that at some time they may invade the wood of the home, causing some sort of damage. Therefore, talk to your local gardening expert to find out what types of plants are right for your weather, the type of home you have, and the type of arbor you have chosen. This will help to make sure that the arbor and plants that you choose remain only decorative and not at all damaging to your home.
