Most of us seem to take wooden benches for granted. When we want to sit down, they just happen to be there. But if you want one in your backyard or somewhere else on your property, then you will have to put a little thought into just what kind of wooden benches to look for, because it isn’t all that simple.
What Type of Wood?
One of the first decisions you will have to make is whether you want your bench painted or not – and if you want to do it. You can certainly buy some very nice benches that are already painted and treated so that they will last for years in any kind of weather without any additional treatment. But one of the fun things about having your own bench is that it can be a summer tradition to paint or stain it.
Some people like benches that are a little more rustic, so you might want to buy wood that is untreated and just needs a light coat of stain. On the other hand, if you want something a little more formal, or you want it to be a specific color, then find one that is already treated and that will save you some time on various coats of paint.
What About the Weather?
The climate in which you live is a big factor in determining what type of wooden benches you should be looking at. Although you may think only in terms of winter weather such as rain or snow, the summer sun can take a huge toll on some types of wood. Therefore, it is a good idea to talk to your local landscaper or garden center to determine what types of wood just are not appropriate for your weather, if it is extreme in either way.
Do You Have to Assemble?
Let’s face it – no one really wants to do a lot of assembly, especially when you are talking about big, heavy parts. The good news is that wooden benches don’t really have all that many parts, so if you do have to assemble, the most you will
have to do is tighten a few nuts and bolts.
On the other hand, you should also put some thought into where you will be putting your bench and whether or not you will want it there permanently. Some people like a bench that is fixed into the ground and for that you will need some form of concrete. If you have experience doing this, then it should be no problem, but if not, then get someone to help you.
Where Should You Buy Wooden Benches?
You might think that the best place to buy a bench of any sort would be at your local patio store or garden center, but the truth is that they are very limited in the amount of stock that they can keep on hand. That is one reason why more and more people are choosing to buy their benches and other structures like garden arbor online, where the prices are better and there are many more choices.
